A five-run sixth inning on Tuesday spurred Camas-Washougal to its first win at the Babe Ruth Baseball 13-year-old World Series.
Camas-Washougal defeated Tallahasse-Leon of Florida 10-6 to improve to 1-2 in pool play at the tournament in Jamestown, N.Y.
If Camas-Washougal beats Tri-County of Maine on Wednesday, it could advance to the quarterfinals on Thursday.
There were six hits in the decisive inning, including a two-run double by Gideon Malychewski. The five-run inning put Camas-Washougal up 10-5.
Leadoff hitter Malychewski went 2 for 5, knocked in three runs and scored three times in Tuesday’s triumph. Kolby Broadbent went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Riley Sinclair, Evan Stott and Michael Whitney each had two hits, including doubles from Sinclair and Stott.
“In this game we got the big hits when we needed them,” Camas-Washougal manager Bob Gibbs said, noting that his team had stranded too many runners in dropping its first two games at the World Series.
Beau Kearsey pitched the final 2⅔ innings to earn the win for Camas-Washougal. He allowed one unearned run, gave up one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Starting pitcher Kolton Andrews pitched 3⅓ innings, and Riley Sinclair pitched one inning in relief.
Camas-Washougal is scheduled to play its final pool-play game at 9 a.m. PDT Wednesday against Tri-County of Maine. Because of rain delays on Tuesday, Tri-County will first play a morning game against Ithaca, N.Y. If Ithaca wins that game, a C-W win over the Maine team would clinch a place in the quarterfinals.
Hazel Dell Metro wins
At the 14-year-old Babe Ruth World Series at Pine Bluff, Ark., Hazel Dell Metro on Tuesday locked up a spot in the elimination phase with a 14-3 win over host Pine Bluff Northern.
The win, which took only five innings, improved HDM to 3-1 in pool play. A win over Sylacauga, Va., (4-0) on Wednesday would give Hazel Dell Metro the top spot in its pool and a bye into the semifinals.
An 11-run third inning highlighted Tuesday’s win and allowed manager Scott Binder to rest his top pitchers.
Jasper Rank went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI and Sam Lauderdale was 3 for 4 with a triple and scored three times to highlight a 17-hit afternoon for Metro.
“The boys are hitting their stride on offense and played another real strong game on defense,” Binder said.
Pine Bluff managed only one hit. Andrew Hensely pitched three strong innings for the win. He was followed by an inning from Jackson Day (pitching for only the second time). Liam Kerr and Derek Mettler pitched in the fifth inning.
Hensley, Kerr, Lowell Dunmire, Cole Sherertz and Isaiah Rupp each had two hits. Dunmire had a triple and Sherertz a double.
