Two local youth sports organizations will help support the Clark County Food Bank with food drives this month.

Washington Timbers FC youth soccer club will be collecting donations during its Summer Slam tournament that takes place Friday through Sunday at the Harmony Sports Complex.

Donations will be accepted during the tournament, and during team check-in between 5 and 8 p.m. on Thursday.

A total of 155 teams in all age divisions are registered for the Summer Slam, a season kickoff tournament for local recreation and select level boys and girls soccer teams.

The food drive at the soccer tournament is organized by high school students JT Correy (Mountain View) and Owen Murphy (Union), who are building on the tradition of a food drive during the Clark County Youth Football kickoff jamboree.

Now in its seventh year, the CCYF and the Titans Youth Foundation food drive will take place on Aug. 29 oat District Stadium in Battle Ground.

CCYF food drive organizers Dylan Henry and Keith Lobis hope to surpass the 67,000 pounds of food collected during the 2014 CCYF food drive.

Henry and Lobis are sophomores at Union High School and former CCYF players. Dylan Henry is the brother of Nolan Henry, who spearheaded the food drive for its first six years.

Nolan Henry is a 2015 Union graduate who is entering his freshman year at Notre Dame.

Sled hockey clinic slated

A sled hockey clinic led by United States national team members Josh Sweeney and Luke McDermott will be held on Sunday at the Winterhawks Skating Center in Beaverton. Ore.

Sled hockey allows people with physical limitations, including amputees, to play ice hockey. The free clinic runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and includes time on the ice.

Sweeney is the captain of the U.S. Paralympic sled hockey team. He scored the only goal in the team’s victory over Russia in the 2014 Paralympic gold medal game.

Since moving to the Portland area last year, Sweeney has been interested in starting a sled hockey program. This clinic is the first step toward forming a team in the region according to Sweeney.

To register for the clinic, which is open to all ages, contact Jill Boeschenstein at jillb@winterhawks.com.
