Camas High School senior Brian Humphreys has continued to compete in several golf tournaments during the summer.

Humphreys, 17, tied for 14th individually, in the Eddie Hogan Cup, Aug. 8 and 9, at Riverside Golf & Country Club, in Portland.

The tournament included some of the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada.

Humphreys shot a 77 on the first day, which included two birdies and five bogeys. In the second round, three birdies and four bogeys contributed to his 73 and an overall score of 150.

“On the first day, I was five over through four holes,” Humphreys said. “I came back and played even par through the rest of the round.

“In the second round, I did not hit the ball well tee to green,” he added. “Overall I was happy with how I played, with not having my best ball striking.”

Christian James, of Nevada, shot 143 to win the tournament, followed by Spencer Tibbits, a Fort Vancouver High School student who shot 144.

Humphreys and Tibbits were part of the Oregon 1 team. It placed second overall with a score of 442, behind a team from Hawaii (439).

Oregon 1 also included Bryce Wortman and Craig Ronne, both from Klamath Falls, Oregon.

“I’m really close to the guys,” Humphreys said. “Spencer and I play high school golf together.”

Humphreys has played in the Hogan Cup four times.

He won the Klamath Basin Junior Championship, at The Running Y/Reames Golf & Country Club, in Klamath Falls, July 15 and 16.

Humphreys shot 70 and 71, to finish three strokes better than Carson Little, of Portland.

On May 18, Humphreys participated in a U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Eugene Country Club, in Eugene, Oregon. His score of 8 over par did not allow him to advance to a sectional qualifier, June 8, in Cle Elum, Washington.

Last year, Humphreys played in a U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Royal Oaks Country Club, in Vancouver. He finished 1-over on the par-72 course.

This year, he placed fourth in the 4A state golf tournament. Humphreys previously placed second and first, respectively, in state during his sophomore and freshman years.

He plans to compete in the Oregon Junior Golf Tournament of Major Champions, at the Oregon Golf Club, in West Linn, Sept. 27.

Humphreys, of Washougal, has lessons every other week with his coach Bruce Stewart, at Stone Creek Golf Club, in Oregon City. When not taking lessons, he practices at Royal Oaks and Camas Meadows Golf Club.

He is looking forward to playing golf in college, but he is not sure where he will go.

“I have narrowed down the search to a couple of schools,” Humphreys said. “I’m talking to my parents and other people who have gone there and are on golf teams.”

His parents are George and Robin Humphreys.

“My dad bought me my first set of clubs,” Brian said. “During the first five years of playing, he was the guy I played with the most. He took me to the range for the first year, and we played together at Green Mountain when he got home from work.

“Mom takes me to the summer tournaments,” he added. “They have both been pretty amazing with the whole golf thing. Mom does not play golf, but she is very supportive with anything I want to do.”

In addition to playing golf at CHS, Humphreys is involved in leadership activities. He is senior class treasurer.

Humphreys’ grade point average is 3.68, and his studies have included taking five Advanced Placement classes.

He is excited for his senior year.

“It will be pretty bittersweet,” Humphreys said.
