Hazel Dell Metro had a hiccup that lasted one inning.
But that was enough to send the team of 14 year olds to a 6-4 loss to Sylacauga, Ala., at the Babe Ruth World Series in Pine Bluff, Ark., on Sunday.
Hazel Dell took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third when Liam Kerr hit a bases-loaded triple.
But five Hazel Dell errors helped Sylacauga score four runs in the bottom of the third.
“We had played sixteen solid games of good fundamental baseball,” Hazel Dell manager Scott Binder said. “I don’t know if it was a letdown from having played a close nine-inning game the night before.”
Hazel Dell went extra innings Saturday to win its opener in 1-0. Three pool-play games remain, beginning today against Seabrook, Ark., at 3 p.m. Pacific.
“We came in focused on our five pool games,” Binder said. “We’re still in good position to win our pool.”
Camas-Washougal drops opener
Ithica, N.Y., rallied late to knock off Camas-Washougal 4-3 in 13-year-old Babe Ruth World Series at Jamestown, N.Y.
In its first game at the tournament, Camas-Washougal took a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning. Gideon Malychewski allowed one hit through four innings.
Holden Lazarus had each of Ithica’s three hits. He tied the game with a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the fifth, then ended the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Camas-Washougal continues pool play against Tri-Valley, Calif., today at 2 p.m.
