Veterans will be able to find some immediate assistance as well as long-term services in the annual stand-down.
Sixty-five to 70 agencies and nonprofit organizations are expected at the event, up from 50 participants a year ago, said Nick Herber, stand-down director.
They include veterans groups and local organizations whose representatives can discuss housing assistance, employment services and counseling.
There also will be staffers from government agencies, including the VA Portland Health Care System. Clark College representatives will be able to discuss veterans’ education benefits.
Some organizations will be able to assist veterans who are making the transition to civilian life.
Free shuttle available
The regional Red Cross and the Tacoma-area Veterans Affairs network will have mobile clinics on site to provide some health screenings.
Other providers will be able to help with traumatic brain injury and suicide prevention and mental health issues.
With appropriate ID, veterans will be able to pick up clothing, sleeping bags, backpacks and other military-surplus supplies.
An afternoon meal will be provided. A free shuttle service will be provided from the downtown Veterans Assistance Center, 1305 Columbia St., or from WorkSource, 5411 E. Mill Plain Blvd.
The Veterans Assistance Center began organizing the stand-downs in 2012 as a way to expand its outreach. The nonprofit center is affiliated with the county’s Veterans Assistance Fund, which is part of Clark County Community Services.
