The final two semifinal teams for the Junior Baseball Western Regional at Propstra Stadium needed a bit of math to sort out a tie.
Manhattan Beach of Southern California, and Selah emerged as the top two teams from Pool A with Nogales of Arizona on the short end.
All three finished pool play 3-1. Arizona lost out on a runs-allowed ratio formula, and SoCal got the edge for the No. 1 spot over Selah on head-to-head results.
In today’s semifinals, Manhattan Beach takes on Gilroy (Northern California) in the 10 a.m. game, and Pool B champ Pearl City, Hawaii (4-0), plays Selah at 1:30 p.m.
The championship is 5 p.m. Wednesday to send a team to the World Series in Taylor, Mich.
In Monday’s pool play games:
Washington 16, Idaho 3 — Carter Young and Payton Andreas were both 3 for 5, and Will Middlebrooks had three RBI for Selah (3-1) in the win.
Arizona 6, Utah 5 — Nogales held off Utah’s late inning rally to improve to 3-1 in pool play. Utah (1-3) scored twice in the sixth and three runs in the seventh. Paul Carreno was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI for Arizona.
Southern California 11, Oregon 2 — Manhattan Beach improved to 3-1, pounding out 16 hits against Beaverton-Aloha. Dylan Dennis was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI, and Chasen Ozawa was 3 for 4 with two RBI for SoCal. Oregon finished pool play 2-2.
