A man was found dead Saturday inside a burning condominium unit in Hazel Dell. Damage from the two-alarm fire also displaced 10 residents of the complex.
The fire was reported about 6:30 p.m. at the Forest Creek Condominiums, 7300 N.E. 16th Ave., with several callers reporting smoke coming from a unit in the complex.
Callers also told emergency dispatchers that all but one person had safely evacuated. The remaining person was still inside the burning unit, according to Clark County Fire District 6.
Arriving crews from Clark County Fire District 6 found fire in a third-story unit. They requested a second alarm and immediately began searching for the person. He was found dead inside the burning unit, said Fire District 6 Assistant Chief Shawn Newberry.
The man’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.
Sarah Walton, public information officer for Fire District 6, said firefighters contained the blaze to the single unit, though five other units sustained water and smoke damage.
Walton said the Red Cross was being called in to assist 10 people displaced as a result.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office, but Walton said investigators have found no sign of foul play.
The two-alarm fire brought 45 firefighters from Fire District 6 and the Vancouver Fire Department, as well as 12 engines and trucks, Walton said.
The condominium complex was built in 1980, according to county property records.
