RIDGEFIELD — The Cathlapotle Plankhouse will showcase traditional technology from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The plankhouse is at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, 28908 N.W. Main Ave., Ridgefield.
There will be demonstrations and hands-on activities, and a chance for families to connect with local culture and wildlife.
Inside the plankhouse, students in the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde Lifeways program will demonstrate carving, weaving, and native art design. Outside the plankhouse, visitors can try their hand at making cordage, throwing an atlatl and using friction to make a fire.
An experienced flintknapper will show how to create stone tools.
At 2 p.m., a wildlife refuge naturalist will lead a hike: “A Walk Through the Oaks.” Parking is $3 per vehicle.
There also will be wildlife watching opportunities on the River “S” Unit auto tour driving route south of Ridgefield.
