Pacific Crest Trail trek update

The Columbian
Published: August 5, 2015, 5:00pm

Editor’s note: The Columbian is following the progress north of two local hikers attempting to walk the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail from Mexico to Canada. Updates are published as they become available.

o Anthony Mannello, 27, of Vancouver reported in Sunday and he’s in Oregon.

He stopped in Ashland to resupply, hiked along the rim of Crater Lake and reached Willamette Pass.

Hiking the length of California took 114 days.

“Almost immediately, the scenery changes into big open grass meadows and dense forests,” he wrote on his blog. “Though still much of the same terrain, it is transitioning slowly and soon it feels like the Pacific Northwest.”

Nights in Oregon are cooler and more comfortable than in California.

“I crossed the Oregon/Washington high point (elevation 7,560 feet) and eased into Willamette Pass to meet up with a good friend who will be hiking with me for the next few days.”

“I feel like I just arrived in Oregon and I’m nearly halfway through this gorgeous state. But I am excited to see old friends and family after four months on the trail. It’s good to be home. ”
