Fire authority measure appears to be failing

A proposal to restructure fire services for north Clark County and the city of Woodland continued to be failing a day after the special election.

As of Wednesday, the measure was trailing by more than 300 votes with only a few dozen left to be counted in Clark County, plus an unknown number in Cowlitz County. However, 88 percent of the eligible voters reside in Clark County.

Approximately 46.7 percent of voters approved of the measure, while 53.3 percent voted against it, according to preliminary results.

The measure proposes consolidating fire resources and finances for Clark County Fire & Rescue, Fire District 2 and the city of Woodland into a new regional fire authority. Under that structure, the agencies would serve Woodland, La Center, Ridgefield, Battle Ground and some unincorporated parts of north Clark County.

Advocates said the deal would streamline services for the 162-square-mile area. That said, it would also come at a cost to the city of Woodland.

The election is scheduled to be certified May 12.
