Ridgefield — View Ridge Middle School science teacher Matthew Whitton worked with Vickei Hrdina, regional science coordinator for Educational Service District 112, to win a Math and Science Partnership grant provided by the state to encourage young girls to become more engaged in those subjects. The grant will look to increase girls’ involvement in those classes, as well as in the science, technology, engineering and math program. Whitton surveyed teachers in the district to see how they thought girls participated in their classes, and the teachers themselves asked students for their thoughts on being females in the STEM program. State funding for the projects total $1.9 million, to be split among the seven grantees, and awards, which have not been determined yet, range from $500,000 to $1.5 million, and will be distributed during the course of the three-year grants.
