Three gymnasts from Southwest Washington who compete for Multnomah Athletic Club have qualified for the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics National Championships.
Gabrielle Spencer, a junior at Prairie High School, won the all-around title in the Level 10 Senior A age division at the USA Gymnastics Region 2 Championships, which took place April 17-19 in Tacoma.
Spencer won the floor exercise and took second place on the vault and the uneven parallel bars.
Destinee Davis, a Woodland High School junior, placed second all-around in the Senior A age group with wins on the bars and the vault.
Jaden Andrus, a Union High School freshman, won the all-around gold medal in the Junior C age division. Andrus placed first on the bars and the vault and second on floor exercise.
The Region 2 meet was attended by top gymnasts from Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
The national championships are May 8-10 at Des Moines, Iowa.
Columbia River lacrosse posts two wins
The Columbia River boys lacrosse team posted a pair of conference wins, topping Union and Southridge of Kennewick to improve to 3-0 in league play.
In Thursday’s 15-11 win over Union, Brian Prigmore had eight goals, three assists and fielded 11 ground balls. Mike Johnson had five goals and one assist for the team formerly known as King’s Way Lacrosse.
Columbia River beat Southridge 10-5 on Saturday at McLoughlin Middle School. No details from that match were reported.
On Monday, River (3-0, 4-6) was scheduled to take on Camas in a match between the top two teams in the Central South Division of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association.
Camas (3-0, 7-3) posted two wins last week, beating Union 11-8 on Tuesday and beating North Kitsap 16-4 on Saturday.
Against Union, Harrison Martin scored five goals and Matt Welinski four, while goalie Jake Lambert made seven saves.
Against North Kitsap, Ayden Garwood and Adam Soubh scored four goals apiece for Camas.
Union (2-2, 7-3) finished its week with a 15-2 Saturday win over Richland. On the week for Union, Parker Lindhorst had nine goals and four assists and Chandler Lindhorst scored nine goals.
This week Union plays Columbia River at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at King’s Way Christian before visiting Richland on Friday and Southridge on Saturday.
Evergreen wins in girls lacrosse
The Evergreen Lacrosse Club beat Auburn Riverside 15-12 on April 21 in Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association play at McKenzie Stadium.
Maddie McKinnon scored six goals, fielded seven ground balls and won seven faceoffs. Olivia Hood had four goals and five ground balls. Alyssa Mehan scored twice and goalie Molly Johnson made four saves.
Evergreen is 5-1, second to unbeaten Puyallup in the Nisqually Conference, and 7-2 overall.
Evergreen takes on Holy Names at 3:30 p.m. Thursday Magnuson Park in Seattle, then hosts Gig Harbor at noon Saturday at McKenzie Stadium.
Battle Ground rugby wins big at Bend
The Battle Ground boys rugby team defeated Summit 35-0 on Saturday in Bend, Ore.
Caleb Johnson scored three tries for Battle Ground.
Coach Brett Major said the runs of team captain John McMahon and Jonathon Bryant, along with the defense of Michael Boespflug, highlighted the effort.
Battle Ground hosts Reynolds at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at Laurin Middle School.
The Prairie Wolf Pack split a pair of mini-matches on Saturday. Prairie beat Lakeridge 17-5 on two late tries from Jordan Marti and an early try from Deontae Connelly.
The Portland Pumas pulled away in the last five minutes to defeat Prairie 17-10. Freshman Juan Marquez and Riley Frazier had strong performances for Prairie, according to coach John Fletcher.
Prairie visits Bend, Ore., on Saturday to face Summit High School.
Also on Saturday, Union won 35-0 at Canby. No details from that match were reported.
In other high school rugby played Saturday, the Clark County Warriors split a pair of round-robin games and the Battle Ground girls team beat Canby 35-0. No details from those matches were reported to The Columbian.
Veterans softball league starts
A summer-long slow pitch coed softball league for veterans will begin play on Sunday at Delta Park in North Portland.
The Portland Metro Softball Association league will feature games at 10 a.m. and noon each Sunday at the William V. Owens Softball Complex. Cost to play is $25 and the league is open to all skill levels, including disabled veterans, their families and friends.
