Chico State University junior Alistair Docherty claimed medalist honors at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament on Monday in Stockton, Calif.
The Union High School graduate forced the playoff on the 18th hole at Brookside Country Club, the school athletics website chicowildcats.com reported, “massaging a treacherous chip shot before drilling an 8-foot birdie. On the first playoff hole against Cal State Stanislaus’ Connor Day, he threaded a 3-wood down the middle, hit a wedge to six feet, and then stuck the winning putt — a quick downhill slider, setting off a wave of emotions.”
Currently ranked fifth in NCAA Division II by Golfstat, Docherty’s first win had eluded him until Monday.
“I’ve been close so many times,” he told the website. “To be honest, this entire year I’ve been frustrated every time I haven’t won. I might have shed a little bit of a tear after making that putt on the playoff hole. It was special.”
Docherty shot 6-under (70-68) to lead the way for the Wildcats, who shot 17-under to grab the top seed in medal match play Monday.
The Wildcats were eliminated Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to fourth-seeded Cal State East Bay.
