MOUNT VERNON — A school board in northwest Washington has joined cities and others in passing a resolution expressing concerns about safety risks from trains carrying crude oil.
The Skagit Valley Herald reports the Mount Vernon School Board’s resolution unanimously passed Wednesday night. It urges additional safety measure for crude oil transport through its school district and Skagit County.
The resolution says crude-oil trains using current rail technology pose a threat to its students and staff. Three elementary schools and one high school sit within 1,000 yards of railroad tracks.
The board also encourages state lawmakers to approve legislation requiring disclosure of volume and contents of rail cars.
