Construction is underway on Battle Ground’s new veterans memorial, and the city continues to sell bricks for the project that will pay tribute to servicemen and servicewomen.

The bricks — which will be engraved with the names of veterans, living or dead — will be placed on the memorial this spring. Though the city’s selling the bricks indefinitely, only the ones purchased through May 15 will be showcased at a dedication ceremony later this year.

The city hosted a ground-breaking celebration last month at the memorial’s home in Battle Ground’s Kiwanis Park. Construction is scheduled to wrap up this year, but the city still needs to schedule the dedication ceremony.

More than 30 veterans from Battle Ground have died in battle in the past 75 years. The city council was inspired to create the memorial after Army Pvt. Andrew Shields was killed in action in Afghanistan about seven years ago.

The names of those who’ve died in battle will be displayed on a brick wall, city spokeswoman Bonnie Gilberti said. Other bricks purchased by the public will be placed at the base of the wall.

The bricks cost $250 apiece. They will include the veteran’s name, branch, and years of service. For more information, contact Battle Ground Parks & Recreation at 360-342-5380 or visit cityofbg.org/veteransmemorial.
