The Cascades Volcano Observatory next week will host a daylong open house inviting people to learn about its work and volcano preparedness.
The gathering will include volcano science exhibits, hands-on activities and demonstrations. CVO staff also will be on hand to help participants learn about volcano monitoring technologies, hazards and ongoing research.
The open house continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 2. The CVO is at 1300 S.E. Cardinal Court, Building 10, Vancouver. The event coincides with Volcano Preparedness Month in May, and comes as the 35th anniversary of Mount St. Helens’ catastrophic May 18, 1980, eruption approaches.
The CVO, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey, monitors volcanoes in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The Vancouver office is also home to the Volcano Disaster Assistance Program, which responds to volcanic eruptions and hazards around the world.
