Clark College students have voted to reject an increase in student fees that would have paid for an addition to the college’s O’Connell Sports Center, the Associated Students of Clark College announced Monday.
With 983 students voting in an online ballot, the tally was 62 percent against the mandatory fee and 38 percent in favor. As a result, the project will not move forward, the student organization said.
Some 800 students had petitioned for the sports center expansion, which was then put to a student vote. Approval would have permanently increased student fees to fund $16.3 million for the facility and its ongoing operational costs. Students would have paid at least a $4.60 per-credit fee for up to 20 credits starting fall quarter. Following construction, the fee would have increased to $5.95 per credit until the construction load was repaid around 2035. Then the fee would have dropped to $1.35 per credit to cover operational costs.
