The M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust will give the University of Portland a $500,000 grant for the school’s Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center.

The $23.7 million center is under construction and is named for the Rev. E. William Beauchamp, a former president of the university. The school expects to complete the project this summer.

The two-story, 72,270-square-foot facility will focus on the physical and mental health of students, faculty and staff with fitness areas, a gym, indoor track and climbing wall.

The Vancouver-based trust provides grants and enrichment programs to non-profit organizations in the Pacific Northwest with a goal of strengthening the region’s educational, spiritual and cultural base in creative and sustainable ways.
