Strong readers work with university students to get stronger

Battle Ground — When Captain Strong Primary School teacher Tony Melo contacted a former instructor at Washington State University Vancouver for some advice on teaching reading, Michelle Rygg had a great idea: immerse her elementary education students in a real-world school situation. The result has been six sessions of one-on-one tutoring, with 26 juniors from WSUV’s elementary education program visiting Captain Strong every other week this semester. The Literacy Buddies read to each other and then write about what they’ve been reading.
