Community notebook: Victory for Crouch in Paris

Hockinson native Sarah (Porter) Crouch won an all-women’s race in Paris on Sept. 14.

Crouch finished the 6.7-kilometer La Parisienne run through the heart of Paris in 22 minutes and 9 seconds, winning by 50 seconds.

Almost 33,000 women started the 18th edition of the run and walk. Crouch led start to finish.

Crouch is a professional runner who now lives in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. She next plans to run in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 12.

Swimmers earn academic honor

Kasey Calwell and Chris Xue of the Columbia River Swim Team have been named to the USA Swimming Scholastic All-America Team.

A total of 865 boys from across the country were named scholastic all-Americans. Xue and Calwell both have a 4.0 grade-point average.

To qualify for the honor, swimmers must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher in academic courses and have qualifying times equal to a junior national bonus time standard. Xue, a senior at Mountain View High School, specializes in the freestyle. Calwell, a senior at Camas High School, swims the individual medley and the breaststroke.

Washougal MX next for cyclocross series

Nathaniel Hart of Washougal won the race for beginner men on Saturday at the Zaaldercross cyclocross race at Alderbrook Park in Brush Prairie.

Karen Goritski of Camas won the race for women 45 and older.

This was the fourth of six races in the Grand Prix Ryan Trebon series that began in August. The next stop is Washougal MX Park on Saturday for the Ninkrossi races. Racing begins at 8:40 a.m. and continues through 4 p.m. This is the fourth and final stop in Clark County for the 2014 GPRT series.

Costumes welcome at Oct. 11 fun run

Registration is open through Oct. 3 for the Vancouver Parks and Recreation and Columbia Springs’ Super Fun Hero Run on Oct. 11. The self-timed 5-kilometer fun run and walk is open to all ages and abilities.

The race starts at 9 a.m. at Wy’East Middle School, 1112 S.E. 136th Ave. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes. The cost to participate is $20 for adults and $10 for ages 10-17. Children age nine and younger can accompany parents for free.

Money raised will go to Vancouver Parks and Recreation’s Everybody Plays children’s scholarship fund and to the Columbia Springs’ children’s scholarship fund.

Event recognizes disabled athletes

Oregon Disability Sports will hold its Celebration of Sport 2014 banquet on Friday at the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and will include honoring ODS Hall of Fame members and other athletes. The event is also the main fundraising event for ODS, which provides adaptive sports opportunities for disabled residents of Oregon and Southwest Washington.
