It is not often that we get a weather change right on the date of a season change. But as autumn rolled in Monday evening at 7:29, low pressure off the coast began its eastward journey.
So on this first full day of autumn, we have rain continuing into Wednesday, with showery conditions expected through Friday. Snow will fall down to about the 6,000-7,000 foot range in the Washington Cascades. Timberline may see a few wet flakes in the air as well.
We can surely use some rain, hopefully not too much at one time. That could be a problem on burned-off mountain slopes, where flash floods and debris flows are concerns. But they’re good to put out forest fires. We can expect at least an inch of rain here in the urban areas and two inches or more in the foothills.
The coastal rivers, which are very low, will get a good freshet that will entice those fall salmon to head upstream. The earth will be quick to soak up much of the moisture at first. Expect slippery roadways today after weeks and weeks of dry weather. Lots of oil and grease to run off. It will be sudsy and foamy for a while.
