The condition of a 9-year-old girl has improved after she was injured in a crash involving an alleged drunken driver.

After nearly two weeks of being listed in critical condition at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland, Agatha Konovalchik was listed in serious condition Monday.

The Battle Ground girl was traveling in a southbound minivan with her brother Jacob Konovalchik, 13, and her mother, Anna Konovalchik, 44, on Sept. 10 when the vehicle was struck by a westbound pickup.

The crash, reported at about 6:45 p.m. at Northeast 182nd Avenue and Northeast 219th Street, sent Anna and Jacob Konovalchik to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center; they were both eventually released.

Agatha Konovalchik was taken by a Life Flight helicopter to the Portland hospital, where she has remained since the crash.

The driver of the pickup, Shane M. Turner, 31, of Battle Ground is accused of being intoxicated at the time of the crash and faces three counts of vehicular assault, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. He was not injured in the crash.

Friends of the Konovalchiks’ are raising money online to cover some of the family’s expenses. To donate, visit gofundme.com/efh8ho. The Web page has raised more than $7,000 so far.

Bob Carlson, a pastor at the Konovalchiks’ church, Brush Prairie Baptist Church, said that the family is happy to see Agatha is doing better, but they know the road to recovery is a long one.

“It will be a difficult journey but the family is ready for whatever that’s going to take,” he said.
