The Camas School District has reason to be proud this week, as third-grade math teacher Tara Obermiller became a finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
Obermiller, who teaches at Woodburn Elementary, is one of five state-level finalists for the award.
The award goes out to as many as 108 teachers around the country each year, and it’s considered the highest honor on behalf of the federal government for a K-12 teacher in math, the sciences and computer science.
District officials say Obermiller’s use of hands-on learning techniques and integration of data and technology into her lessons have made the classroom more engaging and exciting.
The winners of the award are typically announced in the spring.
