Skyview makes statement in 44-9 win over Battle Ground

BATTLE GROUND — Before opening the next chapter in the football season, Skyview’s quarterback and receivers had to get on the same page.

In Friday’s 44-9 win over Battle Ground, Skyview penned a convincing argument that it’s a team to be reckoned with in the 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Bryson Enge caught three touchdown passes and Zac Shomler threw for 230 yards in the league opener for both teams.

Friday’s win at District Stadium looked like a polished final draft of Skyview’s game plan.

It would not have been possible without a few rough drafts and edits that took place after a 28-16 loss to Woodinville last week as Shomler completed 14 of 31 passes.

“Shom and I worked our butts off to get on the same page,” Enge said. “We probably caught about 20 balls off on the side after each practice. We’ve got to be in each other’s heads. We’ve got to be the same working robots.”

Skyview’s defense was also fine-tuned. The Storm shut down what had been the area’s most productive quarterback-receiver combo through two games.

Battle Ground quarterback Gunnar Talkington was held to 148 yards passing after averaging 330.5 a game previously.

Receiver Chris Waters entered the game with 212 receiving yards and five touchdowns. He was held to three catches for 27 yards.

“We pressured them a little bit more,” said linebacker Blake Ingram. “We did our jobs as linebackers, the defensive line, just the whole defense.”

Skyview is 2-1 overall, 1-0 in league. Battle Ground fell to 1-2 overall, 0-1 in league.

Skyview took control of the game during a 6-minute, 36-second stretch in the second quarter.

Leading 7-3, the Storm marched 80 yards in nine plays. Shomler’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Enge capped the drive.

Skyview recovered a fumble on the following kickoff at Battle Ground’s 26. Five plays later, Shomler hit Enge on a slant route for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

“The offensive line was killing it,” Enge said. “They gave Shom all the time in the pocket. It gave me a chance to get open. All the credit goes to them.”

Suddenly, it was 20-3 in Skyview’s favor. From 10:34 left in the half to 3:58, the fumbled kickoff was the only time Battle Ground touched the ball.

Battle Ground drove to Skyview’s 13 on its first drive of the second half, but turned the ball over on downs.

Skyview put the game away on the next drive. Ingram, who also plays running back, scored his second touchdown of the game on a 60-yard run.

Later in the third, Enge got behind the Tigers defense for a 78-yard touchdown catch that put Skyview ahead 37-3.

Camas and Union are both ranked in the top five statewide for 4A. But Friday’s dominating win showed Skyview will have something to say when the final page is written in the GSHL season.

“Around the league we’re not predicted to be the best,” Enge said. “We just want to show people that we’re here to play.”

Ingram, however, won’t settle for just being part of the GSHL conversation.

“For us it’s NBLC,” he said. “Nothing But League Champs.”
