The city of Vancouver will activate new “hybrid beacons” next week at two pedestrian crossings along Mill Plain Boulevard.

On Monday, the city will activate a hybrid beacon crosswalk on Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard at 157th Avenue, where there is currently no crosswalk.

The hybrid beacons use a series of yellow and red lights to command more attention from drivers, according to the city. They also give pedestrians audible and visible direction on when and how to cross the street.

Vancouver police will conduct additional enforcement to make sure drivers are complying with the new signals. Those who fail to stop for the solid or flashing red lights will be ticketed, according to the city.

The two new beacons were installed with the help of a $499,000 state grant, according to the city.
