Try This: Discover local farms’ bounty

The 16th annual Harvest Celebration Day Farm Tour, hosted by Washington State University Clark County Extension, will showcase the bounty of 12 local farms through a self-guided tour. Participating farms will offer self-pick fields and fresh produce, and let visitors meet the farm animals. Specific activities include hay rides on every hour at Bi-Zi Farms, goat cheese production demonstrations at Conway Family Farm, and herb talks by the Garden Delights CSA and Herb Farm. There will be draft horse demonstrations at Yacolt Mountain Farm, Half Moon Farms will showcase its honey and beekeeping practices, and White Oak Alpacas will demonstrate how alpaca wool goes from animal to yarn.

When: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.

The farms tour is among many options for getting out and about this weekend. Here are some other suggestions:

2) Lace up the skates

Vancouver’s Storm City Roller Girls will take on the Willamette Kidney Thieves in the local team’s home bout. The teams of skaters will compete on a flat track, with points scored by designated players lapping members of the opposing team.

3) Safety and fun

Visitors can see a fire truck or police cruiser up close during the Public Safety Complex Open House. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Fire Marshal, Clark County Fire & Rescue and Fire District 6 will host an open house for the community. It will also celebrate this year’s honorees in the Chief for a Day program. There will be emergency vehicle displays, K-9 demonstrations and information booths.

4) Nature in our backyard

The Sturgeon Festival lets children and their families discover the Columbia River ecosystem and the importance of this prehistoric fish. Activities include a live birds of prey presentation at 10:30 a.m., a fish dissection at 11:30 a.m. and a visit from Eartha the Ecological Clown at 1 p.m. Throughout the day, visitors can discover something new from members of the Audubon Society of Portland, Friends of Trees and the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

5) Escape the maze

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) awakes in an elevator, knowing only his name and nothing more. The elevator deposits him in an enclosed world where a large group of teen boys have built a basic society, while trying to discover the secret to the maze that surrounds them. The maze constantly shifts and is patrolled by monestrous Grievers at night. “The Maze Runner” is rated PG-13.
