The Washington State Department of Transportation is looking for volunteers to help with an annual count of bicycles and pedestrians in more than 40 cities, including Vancouver.

The three-day count will take place from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2. About 400 volunteers are needed in the participating cities. WSDOT and the Cascade Bicycle Club began recruiting people in August.

The annual count tallies the number of people bicycling and walking along paths, bike lanes, sidewalks and trails, according to WSDOT. Last year, about 275 volunteers counted more than 66,000 people who walked or biked to their destinations, according to the agency.

Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up online at www.wsdot.wa.gov/bike/Count.htm. People also can call WSDOT’s Paula Reeves at 360-705-7258.

Vancouver is the only city in Clark County being emphasized as part of the count. Kelso and Longview in Cowlitz County also will be included.
