COUGAR — The Mount St. Helens Institute, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and Washington Trails Association will host a grand opening of the Volcano Viewpoint Trail on Sept. 27.
As part of National Public Lands Day, the event will be a chance for volunteers to work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will gather at 9 a.m. at Kalama Horse Camp, on Forest Road 81, just north of Cougar. Volunteers need to register online at bit.ly/QfUvcS.
There will be a 3 p.m. ribbon-cutting at the Volcano Viewpoint Trailhead, just past the Ape Cave parking area on Forest Road 8303.
Work on the Volcano Viewpoint Trail began on National Public Lands Day in 2012. The trail runs about a mile from the Ape Cave parking lot to a gorgeous viewpoint of the south side of Mount St. Helens. Volunteers will complete a short Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility trail and will get a “fee-free” voucher.
