The Battle Ground Police Department is putting out a warning after taking some reports of financial scams targeting senior citizens in the past few months.

Because financial fraud and identity theft ploys can be difficult to recognize, the agency released tips to help residents not fall victim to the scams.

One clear sign of a scam is the request to wire money, Battle Ground police said.

The agency offered these tips and reminders:

Any time a stranger contacts you by phone, mail, email or in person and asks for money, that it is a con. Do not give personal information over the phone unless you initiated the contact, say no to stop persistent solicitors and hang up on suspicious telemarketers.

Do not feel ashamed if you’ve become a victim of fraud, report it to police.
