Prep highlights: Battle Ground volleyball opens league with victory

Van Sickle leads Tigers to 3-0 win over Skyview

Brooke Van Sickle had 21 kills and 11 digs as Battle Ground opened 4A Greater St. Helens League volleyball play with a 3-0 win over Skyview.

The Tigers survived Skyview rallies in the first and second sets, winning both 25-22. They clinched the match 25-16 in the third set.

“It was a nice confidence booster to beat them in three sets,” Battle Ground coach Cheyanne Knight said. “We definitely have some things to work on when it comes to closing out sets, but we finished strong in set three.”

Ashley Watkins added eight kills and 16 assists for Battle Ground.

“She’s starting to really come into her own,” Knight said of the junior, who played for Seton last year. “She’s really attacking the ball well.”

Kaila Robinson had 17 kills and Kelsey Brown had 21 assists for Skyview.

• Taryn Ries, Ridgefield soccer, scored the first goal of the night and then assisted on six more goals in an 8-0 win.

• Lauren Harris, Camas volleyball, had 11 kills and six aces in a win over Heritage.

• Emiliy Griffith, Battle Ground soccer, scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Evergreen.

• Melisa Ljuca, Mountain View volleyball, had 11 kills, three aces, seven digs and three blocks in the Thunder’s win over Evergreen.

• Alexis Cone, Hockinson volleyball, had 15 digs and three kills in the Hawks’ win over Hudson’s Bay.

• Kari Staples, King’s Way Christian volleyball, had 19 kills, three aces and three blocks in the Knights’ win over Stevenson.

• Emily Griffith, Battle Ground soccer, scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Evergreen.

• Trinity Paulsen, Hockinson soccer, score the Hawks’ first three goals and finished with four goals and an assist in a 9-0 win over Hudson’s Bay.

• Heather Deulen, Washougal soccer, scored two goals in a 3-1 win over R.A. Long.

• Heidi Fronk, King’s Way Christian, scored three goals in a 4-1 victory over White Salmon.
