A blown transformer sparked a brush fire Monday afternoon just behind a Les Schwab Tire Centers store in the Orchards area.

The fire was reported at 12:49 p.m. north of the parking lot at the tire center, 11804 N.E. 78th Way.

The fire from the transformer blew into nearby shrubs and the fence line next to some homes, said Vancouver Fire Department Capt. Dean Potter. He arrived in the first engine company, which quickly called for two more engines to help put out the fire.

“When we got there, we realized it was pretty big,” he said.

The fire, fueled by the wind, damaged some sheds. Firefighters remained on scene for a while to make sure the fire wouldn’t reignite.
