Try This: Cars, planes strut their stuff

The Wheels and Wings Cruise-In features classic cars and vintage airplanes as part of the Port of Camas-Washougal’s community appreciation day. There will also be live music, free hot dogs and children’s activities. Entry for the car and airplane show is free, with prizes awarded in many categories. Donations support the Camas-Washougal Aviation Association scholarship fund.

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

Open House Ministries hosts its fourth annual block party, which helps feed the homeless and highlight the family shelter. Along with local vendors, raffle, free activities and food, there will be the Show & Shine Car Show. There is no entry fee, with a $500 gift basket going to the show winner.

“Cruise-In Concert 4 Vets” is a car show with musical performance by Karen Overton from 2 to 4 p.m. Cars can enter 14 different categories for judging, with proceeds benefiting the veterans community garden project.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

Where: Pied Piper Pizza, 12300 N.E. Fourth Plain Road, Vancouver.

Admission: $15 to $20 for car entry, free for spectators.

Artful waterfowl

The Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show brings art and nature together, with hand-carved sculptures of birds, fish and mammals created by top artists from the region. Along with the displays, the event includes free seminars and carving demonstrations. Judging for carved decoys will be held in the outdoor fountain from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. Children can paint a mini songbird from 1 to 3 p.m. as part of Second Saturday activities.

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14.

Travel by firelight

As the sun dips toward the horizon, visitors can travel from the present through the camps of U.S. Army soldiers, Oregon Trail pioneers and the residents of Fort Vancouver Village as volunteers bring each era to life with demonstrations and activities during Campfire and Candlelight. Inside the fort, visitors can step into the night of Sept. 13, 1846, when the employees of the Hudson’s Bay Company mobilized to help the crew of the shipwrecked USS Shark on the Columbia River.

When: 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13.

‘Dolphin Tale 2’

Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) and Winter the dolphin are both facing uncertain futures. After spending his summer working at Clearwater Marine Aquarium with Dr. Clay Hasket (Harry Connick Jr.) and Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff), Sawyer has a chance to spend the semester at sea. But after the death of Winter’s elderly poolmate, Sawyer is unsure if he can leave Winter behind. “Dolphin Tale 2” is rated PG.
