Vancouver police say a phone scammer is posing as a law enforcement officer and extorting payment from residents with the threat of arrest.
One victim paid the caller more than $10,000 between Tuesday and Friday, using numerous prepaid credit cards, the police said. The victim also provided card information to the caller. The victim’s relative reported the incident to police Friday.
Vancouver police continue to investigate the incident and have not confirmed any other victims.
They asked residents not to provide personal or financial information over the telephone.
If contacted by someone claiming to be from an organization requesting personal or financial information, residents are advised to hang up, locate the official organization’s phone number online or in the phone directory and place a call to the official number to confirm any details.
Police asked any other victims of phone scams to contact local law enforcement.
