Letter: Oil terminal is bad idea

The Columbian
Published: September 7, 2014, 5:00pm

Are Tesoro Corp. and Savage Companies, by renaming themselves Vancouver Energy, expecting Vancouver to embrace their proposed terminal?

And if that’s not enough, by hiring an out-of-state analysis company to jack up the projected estimated economic value to $2 billion, and jobs by an additional 50? Why not 2,013? This is a projected estimate. No one can legally be held to it. It has no value.

Today’s polls are meaningless. With the many surveys and applications for retail discount cards, computers have complete demographics on individuals, their income, political party, car, where they shop and what they buy, education, age and health. Pollsters cherry-pick districts for the numbers they want.

Have you wondered why they want their terminal available to tankers? Now they say it’s to service West Coast refineries. How long do you think it will be before this oil is shipped to more profitable markets overseas?

If our refineries are their objective, what’s stopping them from locating inland and distributing by rail or pipeline?

Vancouver’s on the move, upgrading and beautifying. We have the opportunity for a fantastic river development — businesses, offices, homes and recreation for our populace and tourists.

How many people and businesses want to settle in a grimy town, breathing foul air?
