Clark County — The ALS Association’s Ice Bucket Challenge has inspired thousands to film themselves dumping ice water over their head in the name of fun and charity. The viral sensation has already helped bring in around $100 million for the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. If you’ve taken part in the challenge, email a photo and details to neighbors@columbian.com. Here are some locals who’ve gotten in on the act:
• Vancouver City Councilor Jack Burkman took the challenge late last month to support his friend Mike Carnahan, who was diagnosed with the disease 16 months ago. He’s asking for donations to be made to an ALS fundraiser created by Mike’s wife Cindy. Learn more at www.burkman.info/support_carnahans.
• The Latigo ‘N Lace equestrian drill team of Clark County was drenched with ice water on Aug. 19 with help from Clark County Fire & Rescue. The team was honoring Kathy Keeler, who died from the disease on June 6. Keeler was the sister of team member Kimm Roberts. They raised $100 for their effort and hope their outreach will bring in more donations.
• Staff and faculty of Hockinson High School completed the challenge on Aug. 26 and challenged faculty of other area high schools to do the same. The school doesn’t have a total for how much was raised because donations are still flowing in, said teacher Greg Saum.
