The second annual Great Bacon Race to benefit children born prematurely and kids with special needs will take place this month.
The Great Bacon Race is a nonprofit created by James Hanset, whose 4-year-old son, Holdyn Hanset, was born at 24 weeks gestation and weighed only 1 pound 8 ounces. Doctors gave Holdyn a 4 percent chance of survival.
Holdyn has survived seven brain surgeries and celebrated his fourth birthday this year.
“The race serves as a platform to raise funds to help provide assistance to families that have children with birth defects to improve their quality of life in the here and now,” James Hanset said. “It also gives children with special needs the opportunity to participate in the race, to either walk, run or wheel across the finish line.
The Great Bacon Race event begins at 8 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Pearson Air Museum, 1115 E. Fifth St. The event includes a 1/2 mile children’s race, 5K, 10K and half marathon. It will also include Holdyn’s Race, an opportunity for special needs kids to cross the finish line.
