A Battle Ground man died in the hospital after a Friday-evening rear-end crash in the Orchards area.

Around 6:30 p.m. Friday, Christopher D. Steffen, 62, was heading north on state Highway 503 in a Ford F-150 pickup when he struck the back of a Ford Expedition that was stopped in the left turn lane at Northeast 71st Street, according to the Washington State Patrol. The Expedition was then pushed into a Ford Focus that also was stopped at the intersection.

A Clark County sheriff’s deputy performed CPR on Steffen. He was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, where he later died, the State Patrol said.

The driver of the Expedition, 20-year-old Jafar S. Tiatia, and the driver of the Focus, 53-year-old Alan W. Connors, both of Vancouver, were not injured.

The State Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
