A city of Ridgefield pickup was stolen Monday morning.

A public works employee was doing some work near Overlook Park in downtown Ridgefield about 9:30 a.m. when his city-owned white 2013 Ford F-150 was stolen, according to Ridgefield Police Chief Carrie Greene.

Police are still investigating what happened, but initial information indicates that the maintenance employee stepped away from the vehicle to perform a task, and a transient jumped into the vehicle and drove away, Greene said.

The keys are believed to have been in the vehicle, she said. “The guy must have seen an opportunity and took it,” Greene said.

A short time later, someone called to report a city of Ridgefield vehicle driving erratically south on Interstate 5, Greene said.

She said she believes the vehicle will turn up abandoned and encourages anyone who spots the truck, or who has information on the incident, to call Ridgefield police at 360-887-3556 or 911.
