Skyview scores shutout of Mountain View, 31-0

A shutout in the Class 4A Greater St. Helens League.

Doesn’t happen a lot.

Especially against a team that just a few weeks ago had more than 600 yards of offense and scored 56 points.

The Skyview (4-2, 3-1 GSHL) defense did it, though, recording a 31-0 shutout at Kiggins Bowl on Friday night.

Josh Emmy rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown, Zac Shomler threw for 224 yards and a score, and the defense gave Mountain View trouble all night in a 31-0 victory.

“It means we worked hard enough to stop a really good team,” Skyview linebacker Beyden Heppler said. “We put in the effort, the sweat, and the occasional blood to do what we needed to do.”

Mountain View (1-5, 1-2 GSHL) was held to 216 yards of offense in this contest.

“I’d like to thank our coaching staff,” said Skyview defensive lineman Marquis Mitchell, who was in on two sacks. “It was a complex offense to stop. We were well coached throughout the week. We came to practice and got better and better every day. They have a good offense. They have some good athletes. We just came to play.”

Skyview coach Steve Kizer — no secret, he’s a defensive guy — was thrilled with the zero on the board.

“Our defense would bend a little bit but we didn’t break,” he said. “That offense is hard to stop. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone stop them yet. Coach (Julian) Williams (the defensive coordinator) put together a great game plan and the kids executed it very well.”

The Storm were plenty efficient on offense, too.

Emmy rushed for 65 yards in the first quarter, which included his rushing touchdown. Blake Ingram then rushed for 75 yards in the second quarter. He also scored.

In between the touchdowns, Shomler was showing off his passing touch. He was 16 of 22 for 179 yards in the first half.

“I love these guys,” Shomler said. “They do the job. Anything I do is just a reflection of the other guys kicking butt.”

Emmy said the passing game opened up the running game.

“We are capable of so much right now,” Emmy said. “We’ve been (playing) hard, me and Blake Ingram been running good.”

Braden Hadfield also connected on a 32-yard field goal in the first half for a 17-0 lead at the break.

The Skyview defense decided to get in the scoring column in the third quarter. Kyle Oman intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards to the house for a 24-0 advantage.

Shomler found Bryson Enge on an 11-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
