A series of prescribed fires in the coming weeks will cause visible smoke in the east end of the Columbia River Gorge, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The planned burns will occur in the Catherine Creek area in Washington and the Rowena area in Oregon. The fires are part of an ongoing effort to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires and improve forest health, according to the Forest Service.

The timing of the fires will depend on several factors, including temperature, moisture, wind speed and direction, officials said. The Forest Service urged drivers to use caution and slow down if smoke drifts across state Highway 14 in Washington, Interstate 84 in Oregon or other local roads.
