A celebration of life for accomplished Vancouver drag racer Bob Comeau is planned for Sunday. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Comeau family shop, 5112 N.E. 119th St., in Vancouver. Comeau died on Sept. 24 at the age of 75 after a six-month battle with brain cancer.
Comeau began bracket drag racing in 1980 at Portland International Raceway and won multiple championships at PIR and at Woodburn Dragstrip as a driver and as a crew chief. Most recently, he won the 2013 Hot Rod 2 Division points championship at Woodburn Dragstrip. He also won nostalgia races at Baylands Raceway in Fremont, Calif., Sears Point in Sonoma, Calif., Sacramento Raceway, Canada’s Mission Raceway and Renegade Raceway in Yakima.
As a crew chief, he won two Division 6 titles and one Heritage Nostalgia Series championship. In 2011, with Bob’s son Paul driving, the Comeaus finished second in the Pro Class race at the National Hot Rod Association Summit Racing Series national championships.
Comeau built every model of 1939 Chevrolet, some models more than once. His gold 1939 Chevy four-door sedan won multiple awards for best appearance.
