Community sports notes: Clark County Cougars roll at Special Olympics soccer

Local team goes unbeaten in Oregon event

The Clark County Cougars went unbeaten at the Special Olympics Oregon State Fall Soccer Tournament, played on Nov. 15 at Providence Park in Portland.

The Cougars won gold medals in the division for Senior Unified teams. On Special Olympics Unified Teams athletes with and players without intellectual disabilities are teammates.

The players for the Cougars at this tournament were Alex Ables, Daniel Barich, Meridian Bosner, Payten Brooks, Justin Dalton, Jamie Gough, Ryan Hallquist, Estevan Rosales, Alex Tetz and Wyatt Tetz. Coaching the team were Tim Bishop and Jessica Blair.

Local team falls in Pop Warner regionals

The Salinas Cardinals beat the East County Jets of Camas 8-6 in the Pop Warner Pacific Northwest Region championship game for players ages 9-12.

The Pee Wee Division 2 title contest was played on Saturday in Spokane. The result earned a trip to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Florida for the team from northern California.

A team from Kelso won the title in the Junior Pee Wee Division for ages 8-11 and will represent the Great Northwest Conference at the tournament in Florida.

In a Division 3 Pee Wee playoff game at Spokane, the Post Falls Bengals beat the East Vancouver Venom 20-19 in overtime. Despite the loss, the East Vancouver team is scheduled to travel to Santa Clara, Calif., Dec. 5-7 to participate in the Best of the West tournament.

In a Mitey Mite Division regional playoff game for players ages 7-9, the East County Jets beat the Spokane Mustangs 18-6.

Almost 200 run in CCRC Turkey Trot

Jesse McChesney of Vancouver and Madeleine Sellers of Stevenson were the race winners during the Clark County Running Club Turkey Trot 5K on Saturday.

McChesney, 27, completed the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes and 53 seconds. Kaden Harberson, 18, of Vancouver was second in 16:39.

Sellers, 56, was the first female finisher. Her time was 20:12.

The CCRC gave away 25 turkeys to participants. A total of 170 took part in the run. Results for the participants who ran the course for time are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

The club will hold a run on the Lacamas Park Heritage Trail starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Participants can run either 3 miles or 7 miles. The race will start near the Lacamas Lake boat ramp. Visit clarkcountyrunningclub.com for more information.

Fitness invitational set for January

The CrossFit Fort Vancouver Invitational will take place Jan. 10-11 at the Clark County Event Center.

The invitational fitness competition will feature 64 athletes, among them many who have competed at the CrossFit Games. CrossFit Fort Vancouver stages the event, which was held for the first time in 2014.

“Our goal is to give the top athletes in the Northwest the opportunity to compete outside the CrossFit Games season (and) to make the Northwest region more competitive on the worldwide stage,” said Adam Neiffer, founder of CrossFit Fort Vancouver.

A limited number of single-day tickets will be available at the door each day, and admission is free for anyone 17 and younger.

Adult soccer helps feed the hungry

A dozen coed adult soccer teams take part in a tournament on Saturday to collect food for the Clark County Food Bank.

The seven-a-side tournament runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Luke Jensen Sports Park, 4000 N.E. 78th St.

The tournament was organized by Jimmy Pardo, an intern with the Mount Adams Institute Vetswork Program, in conjunction with Comeback Sports. Comeback Sports organizes adult recreation sports programs.

The team that contributes the most food will receive shoes courtesy of Next Shot Sports Gear of Vancouver, according to Pardo.

Free rugby clinics

A series of introduction to rugby clinics for youths in grades 3-8 will be held each of the next three Saturdays at Battle Ground High School.

The free clinics run noon to 2 p.m. on Nov. 29, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13.
