Candidates sizing up new Clark County positions

The race is on.

A week after Clark County’s passage of a home rule charter, talk has turned to who will run for the two new spots on the expanded board of county councilors, which goes into effect at the beginning of the year.

Next year will see the countywide election of a board chairperson and the districtwide election of a new councilor.

Republican Commissioner Tom Mielke, the board’s current chairman, told The Reflector newspaper he intends to run for the position and believes he has the political support to be elected. In 2012, Mielke won re-election over Democrat Joe Tanner with 51.72 percent of the vote.

The field of potential candidates will likely be a full one when all is said and done.

Political consultant Jim Mains has been vetting potential candidates, gauging their name recognition. Many prominent Republicans and Democrats have expressed interest in running for both positions, he said, adding that he expects more announcements to trickle out before the end of the year.
