Try This: Learning takes flight at Open Cockpit Day

Visitors old and young alike can explore historic airplanes on display during Open Cockpit Day. The Pearson Field Education Center will host many activities, including trying out the flight simulator lab and building a model glider. Those ages 8 through 17 have a chance to take a free airplane ride with volunteers, weather permitting. Flights are first-come, first-served.

2. Run to help

Run Like a Girl features 5K and 10K races to benefit Second Step Housing, a local nonprofit working to help eliminate homelessness. The routes start and end at Fort Vancouver, taking participants along the Columbia River. The event also includes a Kids Fun Run, music, prizes and local vendors. Participants are encouraged to dress up in costumes. Race-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

3. Happy days in Hockinson

Hockinson Fun Days starts with a big serving of pancakes at the Fire District 3 station, which will host a pancake breakfast, along with fire apparatus demonstrations and activities. The annual Fun Days parade starts at noon from the high school, with Clark County Sheriff Garry Lucas as the grand marshal. It will be followed by the fan favorite bed races. The community carnival and bazaar will run throughout the day, with a pause for the parade. Sunday will feature the Hockinson Alumni Picnic at Hockinson Meadows Community Park.

When: 7 to 11 a.m. for breakfast, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today; 1 p.m. Sunday.

4. Water-wheeled wonder

Spend a day exploring the woods around the Cedar Creek Grist Mill before stopping inside the 1876 building for Bread and Butter Day. Visitors can learn how to churn butter to top the mill’s freshly fried bread made with grain milled on site.

When: 1 to 4 p.m. today. The grist mill is also open 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

5. Beyond ‘Beauty’

Young fairy Maleficent strikes up an unlikely friendship with a trespassing farmhand, Stefan. When he has a daughter, Maleficent seizes the opportunity for revenge. But 16 years later, Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) has Maleficent rethinking her plans. “Maleficent” is rated PG.
