COUGAR — Gifford Pinchot National Forest road No. 81-830 to Climbers Bivouac on the south side of Mount St. Helens is open for the season.

Motorists are urged to drive slowly due to grading and guardrail repair ongoing through the end of June.

“Ptarmigan trail out of Climbers Bivouac is patchy snow and we do recommend an ice axe and crampons when traveling on snow,” says Sharon Steriti, climbing ranger for the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. “Micro spikes and snowshoes are also useful for traction in the snow.”

For more information about climbing the peak, contact the Mount St. Helens Institute at 360-449-7883 or info@mshinstitute.org.
