Volunteers needed to build several local hiking trails

Volunteers are needed for morning work parties on June 7 and June 21 to build a trail between Vancouver Lake and Buckmire Slough in Clark County.

Organized by the Washington Trails Association, the work parties are intended to encourage youth and families in urban projects.

Workers also are needed June 14 and 15 to finish a new trail between Ape Cape and a nearby viewpoint on the south side of Mount St. Helens.

The trail was started earlier and has about 300 feet to go. Overnight camping is available and a potluck is planned on June 14.

Volunteers are needed June 28 and June 29 on Silver Star Mountain in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and for a 9 a.m. to noon event July 5 at Whipple Creek Park in Clark County.

WTA provides tools and instructions. No experience is needed.

National Get Outdoors event slated in Vancouver June 14

Fishing, archery. climbing, a wilderness skills test and more will be featured from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 14 at the sixth annual National Get Outdoors event at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, 1115 E, Fifth St.

The event encourages local residents, particularly youth, to pursue outdoor lifestyles by embracing parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands.

Entrance fees for the fort are waived for the day.

Agencies involved include the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, City of Vancouver and Parks Foundation of Clark County.

Mount Rainier National Park campgrounds opening

ASHFORD, Wash. — Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh campgrounds at Mount Rainier National Park have opened for the summer.

Although several feet of snow remain, Paradise Inn, National Park Inn at Longmire, Stevens Canyon Road, White River road and the Box Canyon picnic area also are open.
