A Clark County project to repair a landslide on Northwest 179th Street in the Sara area has been recognized for excellence by the American Public Works Association’s Washington chapter.
The repair was named project of the year in the disaster or emergency construction/repair category for projects of less than $5 million. The award was presented last week.
Clark County Public Works closed a short section of 179th Street in January 2013 after a landslide started undermining the north side of the road, about 1,200 feet west of Northwest 41st Avenue. Soil and other material slid into Whipple Creek. Because the repair involved work in the creek, it could be done only in the summer, when it would have the lowest impact on fish.
Columbia Pacific Construction Inc., a Woodland contractor hired by the county, started the project in early August 2013. Crews stabilized the slope and enhanced fish habitat in the creek. The section of 179th Street was repaved and reopened to through traffic in late September 2013.
