FORD/AAA STUDENT AUTO SKILLS COMPETITION
Cole Hoffmann and Trevor Peterson, representing Prairie High School as a team, won second place in the annual Ford/AAA student auto skills competition, May 6 at Renton Technical College. Teams from ten schools statewide qualified to compete in the state finals. Kurt Sitton is their instructor.
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL DRILL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Prairie High School’s armed and unarmed drill teams competed at the national drill championships this month in Daytona Beach, Fla., placing in three events: fourth nationwide for color guard, fifth for exhibition, and individually, Andrew Friason finished second nationwide in armed individual regulation. The armed team finished fourth overall in the challenge level. The unarmed team placed fifth in the master’s level team exhibition event.
Battle Ground High School’s unarmed drill team qualified to send its JROTC teams for the first time to the national drill championships in Daytona and came home with a fifth-place trophy in the exhibition drill competition in the master’s level event.
SUPERINTENDENT’S HIGH SCHOOL ART SHOW
Battle Ground’s Riley Donahue, a student at River HomeLink, received the judge’s choice award for his art entry, “Ditat Deus (God Enriches).” Donahue advanced to the state level after competing against 239 entries at the regional art show in Vancouver. The piece was painted on two plywood panels with acrylic paint and is approximately 4 feet high and 8 feet long. Donahue said his piece was inspired by the harsh immigration laws in Arizona; he created it to show that racial profiling is still a part of our society.
