Most people have heard of “free and reduced lunch” for low-income students provided by the federal government at public schools. But what happens when school is out?
Share Vancouver is among the local agencies that take on the job. Sponsored by the Simplified Summer Food Service Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture — and by some local foundation grants and donated kitchen space at Evergreen Public Schools — Share will provide free breakfasts and lunches for children at 19 Clark County locations this summer. More than 30,000 meals are expected to be served between June 30 and Aug. 15.
The Summer Meals program will provide free meals at four city parks, eight public schools, four apartment complexes, several summer camps and one community center.
All children 18 and younger are welcome to partake in free food even if they are not registered for ongoing summer programs.
