Prep roundup: Heartbreaker strikes Woodland at district

The Woodland softball team was headed to the Class 1A district championship game on Wednesday.

Then it came came unraveled.

Montesano scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and beat the Beavers 4-3 on Alyssa Gustafson’s two-run home run in the semifinals at Fort Borst Park.

The loss dropped Woodland into a winner-to-state/loser-out game on Saturday against La Center.

Woodland opened play Wednesday with a 7-0 win over Rochester.

Elma scores a run in the top of the seventh inning to beat La Center 3-2 in another first round game Wednesday in Centralia.

Abby England came back against Stevenson and struck out 13 to lead La Center to a 7-1 win in an elimination game against the Bulldogs. Amanda Moudy went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI.

2A district golf — Hockinson had three players in the top six and qualified six golfers to the state tournament in winning the 2A district title title at Mint Valley.

Cameron Bielat paced the Hawks with a 36-hole total of 183 to place third. Shelby La Tourette placed fifth (184) and Cara Christensen was sixth (186). Megan Swindell (ninth), Hallie Escola (15th) and Isabella Koenig (17th) also advanced to state.

Hockinson outdistanced Capital 193-180 in the team standings.

Also advancing to state were Grace Collins of Washougal (10th), and Erin Siegel (13th) and Karly Beattie (16th) of Ridgefield.
